The Golden Age Of Mobile Apps
A new study predicts that the already-popular mobile app download market will boom in the coming years. The study suggests that in 2012, mobile device users will download 50 billion apps and create $17.5 billion in revenue for app makers and carriers. For 2009, those numbers were 7 billion app downloads and $4 billion in revenue. At this rate, the app market will eclipse the CD market in total value sometime during 2012.
With that kind of revenue growth, it’s not surprising to see others looking to cash in on the phenomenon: There were eight app stores in the beginning of 2009, but by the end of the year, there were 38. The average selling price of apps was $1.90 in 2009, but the study authors expect that price to decrease by 29% over the next three years.
